Community-Based Natural Resource Management

The Challenge

In the regions where we work, land degradation, deforestation, and soil erosion pose a direct threat to the livelihoods of pastoral and agro-pastoral communities. Without healthy, productive land, food security is compromised, and vital ecosystems that have sustained these communities for centuries are at risk.

Our Solution

Our approach is rooted in community ownership. We empower local institutions and community members with the knowledge and tools to manage their natural environment sustainably. By reviving traditional conservation practices and introducing new techniques, we help communities protect their land and its resources for the long term.

Key Activities:

  • Engaging with community leaders (Gada leaders, kebele administrators) to build support for conservation.
  • Conducting community-wide sensitization and awareness campaigns on environmental protection.
  • Establishing and supporting environmental clubs in 10 local schools and communities.
  • Developing 5 community-owned, multi-purpose tree nurseries.
  • Providing essential tree seeds, tools, and training for nursery management and soil & water conservation (SWC).
  • Organizing large-scale tree planting efforts on communal land.
  • Enclosing and rehabilitating degraded land under community supervision.

Impact by the Numbers:

  • 500 community members trained in Natural Resource Management & Soil and Water Conservation.
  • 325 households directly benefiting from conservation activities.
  • 15 hectares of degraded communal land under active rehabilitation.
  • 10 environmental clubs established to foster a culture of conservation.
